Still, revival results remain the same: profound spiritual growth. This is true whether limited or extensive in geographical impact.

For, “the law which moves the mighty tides of the ocean is the same which ruffles the surface of the little pool made by the rain of a summer afternoon.”

Law implies an orderly sequence of movements. Do revivals exhibit this kind of movement? Do awakenings occur at definite intervals? Can any sequences be discerned? If that were possible, we could forecast their appearance with some precision. However, this is obviously not the case. History abounds with instances where churches have felt a desperate need for revival only to experience little blessing. Then when least expected, the heavens opened. Spurgeon’s move to New Park Street presents a classic case in point. The term “law” in this context must not be interpreted legalistically. The Spirit moves as He wills. Yet we may believe that these periodic movements operate on what we could call “Divine law,” based on the inscrutable hidden purpose of God.

This law of periodicity reveals several important facts. First, God finally controls His Church and will give His people what they need when they need it as He sees fit. Second, God’s wisdom far supersedes ours, and we must always place the timing of these awakenings in the divine economy of things. Third, revivals do not come by caprice or just because the Church does certain things in a formal, structured fashion. Although the people of God have their part, the sovereignty of God is central. The law is not mechanical. Perhaps it can be best summarized by saying the needs and activity of the Church and the sovereignty of God form the warp and woof of genuine revival.

Moreover, as implied, there is always an ebbing tide before the awakening flood comes. A general defection from “the faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude 3) often infects the Church just before awakenings dawn. Dullness and lethargy pervade God’s people. Dark days settle in. These periods are also characterized by straying from the central task of evangelism. Churches and pastors begin to substitute secondary ministries for this primary responsibility. Priorities get reversed.

Along with these problems, deviations from apostolic theology can subtly creep in. Compromise on ethical and moral principles tends to follow hard on the heels of doctrinal errors. A critical and blase attitude envelops many as people grow cynical about those whom they label as “puritanical” and “pious.” This no doubt accounts for much of the criticism Spurgeon received in the early days. Some actually defect and fall into open sin. In a word, plain “worldliness” takes over, and the Church sinks into a Laodicean syndrome. Yes, church programs go on, often with greater fervor. There is a form of godliness but a denying of real spiritual power (2 Timothy 3:5). With spiritual power missing, and the Church neither hot nor cold, it stands in dire danger of the Lord’s Laodicean rejection (Revelation 3:16).

Although ebb times seem inevitable the Church and the people who make up the Church are not thereby exonerated and blameless for their defections. In the final analysis, believers become what they want to become, and bear the consequences of their own actions. Christians also reap what they sow, individually and collectively.

Another important revival principle is “the fullness of time.” The ebbing spiritual tide has its limits as surely as the ebb tide of great oceans. Apathy and coldness has its end. The further the tide ebbs, the greater power and force it gains to return and overflow the arid land.

The ebb tide seems to create among God’s true people a deep sense of dissatisfaction.

A period of gloom settles in—even to the point of weariness and exhaustion. Sick in soul and heart, Christians turn to God with a deep sigh. People pray and pray.

But can these burdened believers be found? It must be recognized that even in the darkest hours, the Church always contains those who have not bowed the knee to Baal during the ebb tide. In these precious few the burden and aching grows. Finally, the longing for better things becomes intense pain, and the burdened determine with Jacob of old, “I will not let thee go, except thou bless me” (Genesis 32:26). And though God may well “touch their thigh” as He did Jacob and they limp through the rest of their days, they prevail.

Revival is always born in prevailing prayer. Prayer constitutes the one, basic, unalterable, central principle and law of awakenings. Intercession opens the door to the fullness of time,

and Spurgeon decidedly had a praying people. The prayer meetings in his church were tremendous. The people prayed and fasted with a tenacity that brought the blessings.
